Megaman X Series

As a family we are pretty big fans of the Megaman X series. Nostalgia is of course a big part of it but our kids have become quite the fans. The modern legacy collection is a great way for everyone to have fun playing it with some smart options to make it easier.

For when the grownups (big kids at best let’s be honest) play we prefer the original experience. Be it on SNES or Playstation it’s something we have many memories of and keep coming back to. The tight gameplay, great music and awesome level design makes it a favorite series of ours (except X7 sheesh). Great games!

Livestream 5/20/2021 – Strike Commander

People had asked me about playing a flight sim so I figured I’d oblige! I played Strike Commander all the way through when I bought it back in the day. The version I had (and still have) is the later released CD version that combines the base game, an expansion plus the speech pack adding fully voiced dialogue. Sadly I only have the CD without the big box which was lost in a move years ago.

While I was able to handle the game when I was younger it was a bit of a rougher time this go around! The second mission in particular proved to be challenging but we made it through eventually. Couple that with some joystick problems and it was a good, classic retro PC stream with all that comes with it! Check out the replay below.

GL Quake Unfiltered Textures

When I played GL Quake the first time using my then brand new Voodoo card it was a revelation. The smooth textures, lack of defined pixels and speedy framerate was out of this world. Normally Quake struggles a lot to run at 640×480 on a 150-200 MHz Pentium machine which is cured basically by the Voodoo card. That said the completely smoothed out textures aren’t to everyones liking which I can understand. It does wash things out a bit and I recently came upon this article: https://www.quaddicted.com/webarchive/www.quaddicted.com/software-vs-glquake/software-vs-glquake-texture-filtering/

It goes into detail on how you can actually turn off the filtering GL Quake employs and the best way I can describe it that it now looks more pixelated and reminds me a lot of the modern interpretations of retro shooters that are coming out these days. I think I like it! Pictures go in order of unfiltered and normal mode for each set.

Now while I think I prefer this look these days it’s easy to forget that this sort of smooth texture filtering was something completely new. We were totally used to seeing pixelated effects back then so what the Voodoo cards did was a total eye opener. Still I like options!

Rad… rad to the max!

This game is mediocre at best but the box art is something else. It’s so over the top I love it!

The back of the box lays out just how to the point the action of the game is. A supercop and a black panther team together… do you even need to read any more?

I did try out the game at one point and it’s really bad. Slow to control, tough as nails and extremly repetetive. Check out the video below to see what I mean, it’s not my gameplay but that’s pretty much all there is to the game…

The K6-2 300 Build Article

So I wanted to try and write out some companion pieces to go with my videos or even video series. Summarizing whatever it is I’m covering in article format and I figured it was a great place to start with the K6-2 300 build. Since that featured 2 videos as well as a live stream I wanted to have it covered in an article as well. It’ll take time I think to really get in the groove of it as I can’t exactly call myself a seasoned writer… insert muffled sympathy chuckles… but I’d like to get better at is as well. The original idea was always to expand and grow the web site with articles, inventories and files that might be helpful to the retro community. Either way you can find the article on the K6-2 build here:
