A new MS-DOS Game – Slipspeed

I was recently made aware a new MS-DOS game was released not long ago. That being a game that is fully made for DOS and the version you buy actually runs in an emulation wrapper like Dosbox. I think that’s super neat and I’m all for it. When I also found out it is available in a big box version well that was enough of that take my money!

The game is called Slipspeed and it’s basically a top down racer with somewhat Wipeout-esque physics in that your vehicles slide more than they drive on the surface. The shareware version is avialable for free if you want to try it out. I’m going to avoid spoiling it for myself until when the big box version arrives and I can do a full video on it. Requires a 486 or better with Pentium recommended!

Livestream 4/29/2021 – Revenant

I wanted to try some more action RPG oriented title again last night and that landed on the 1999 game Revenant. An interestingly deep action focused RPG with fully voiced dialogue, complex fighting system and really neat graphics. And a grumpy anti-hero protagonist because it’s the 90s of course. We ran into some technical issues with the selected machine and had to switch over but hey it’s all part of the retro experience. Let’s just say this game plays nicer with a bit more horsepower than the recommended specs. Watch the replay below.

Big Box Inventory – A Start

So I wanted to basically catalog my entire collection slowly but surely. The first small step in this was to throw together a big box page for Space Quest which I took some pictures of recently. The idea would be to have each game photographed, inventoried and with some basic info on it. Maybe a couple of screenshots or gameplay too. This is the very first fledgling step to that so feel free to check it out at the link HERE

Doctor Spin – Tetris Single

Many years ago my brother saw my budding gaming desires growing and being an ardent Maxi Single collector (it was a long time ago alright) gifted me this glorious one. Doctor Spin – Tetris.

It clearly was a marketing ploy from Nintendo and it goes all in on the 90s style. It contains other hits such as Play the Gameboy. But as a kid I just loved it. Here was official music that went on about playing Tetris and Gameboy. Blew my little kid mind. The complete track list is as follows:

  1. Tetris 7″ Mix
  2. Tetris 12″ Mix
  3. Tetris – Hardcoremix
  4. Play Gameboy

I should also mention that Doctor Spin is actually Andrew Lloyd Webber. Yes that Andrew Lloyd Webber! Not sure on the back story there but I’d say that qualifies as pretty neat.

Anyway if you want to take a listen here are 2 of the highlights off the single:

Play the Gameboy

Livestream 4/21/2021 – Alpha Centauri

This week we ended up streaming a day early due to some scheduling conflicts on my side. The game for the week was Alpha Centauri from Firaxis games. Or sorry I should say Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri since they sure like to put his name on the box! And I suppose it’s warranted considering the impact his games have had on the industry in general. The Civilization series paved the way for a myriad of amazing empire management games.

Alpha Centauri itself is an evolution of Civilization 2 which while not officially a sequel it takes the space race ending of that game and poses the question of what happens when the colonists arrive at their destination. That destination is of course Alpha Centauri and the game focuses a lot more on the ecology and experience of being on a new planet. Factions are grouped around idealogical ideals rather than countries. So one faction focuses on science and discovery, another on trade and commerce and the one we played last night on the ecology of the planet.

I had never played this faction before and I was keyed in on it from suggestions of the stream viewers. And a good suggestion it was! It was really fun building armies of mind worms making sure people care about the planet. Recycle or the mind worms are coming after you! Check out the replay of the stream below.
